Application for HPC Doctoral Student Affiliate Program
The Hopkins Population Center (HPC) is launching a Doctoral Student Research Affiliate Program designed to support doctoral students involved in population research and foster interdisciplinary collaboration. This initiative aligns with the center’s strong commitment to advancing the field of population studies while promoting the professional growth of emerging population scholars.
Students can apply to become affiliates of HPC if they satisfy both of the following criteria:
- Actively enrolled doctoral students engaged in research related to population studies and demography and;
- Can identify a current HPC Faculty Associate who will agree to sponsor the student’s affiliation.
HPC can provide the following services to our student affiliates:
- seminars and methodological workshops
- flexible workspace at the new HPC location in the Agora Building (expected 2024)
- support for participation in the annual meeting of the Population Association of America (up to $1000 to cover travel expenses and registration fee, for a student presenting a paper or a poster co-authored with an HPC faculty associate)
- support student-initiated events such as working groups and journal clubs
- maintain a student mailing list to disseminate information and resources.
As part of HPC’s mandate to promote population research and interdisciplinary collaboration as an NIH-funded center, student affiliates are expected to actively engage by attending seminars and workshops, and participating in working groups and special events. Each year, we expect student affiliates to attend at least two in-person seminars, and contribute to at least one working group, journal club, or other HPC-centered activity. The designation as a student affiliate will undergo annual review.
An online application form is available here and will be reviewed by center administrators.
